This is a day that we’ve been counting down for many weeks. My eldest son, Tom is 5 today and he’s been super excited for this day for a long time. Being 5 it seems, is so grown up and so different to being 4, or so I’ve been told.

This year as we have a house move looming so we’ve decided not to have a birthday party in its usual format and we’ve agreed to just celebrate his birthday with the family and have a tea party to celebrate.  I have agreed though that once we move he can have a traditional kind of party, a little like the ones I used to have when I was growing up.

As it was Tom’s birthday we gave him the opportunity to choose what he’d like us all to do and he asked if we could go to the cinema to see Shaun the Sheep so that’s exactly what we did! We spent the morning opening presents and playing games and both Richard and I were so impressed with him as he gave 3 presents to his little brother so he could open them too and wouldn’t feel left out.  Once he’d opened our presents we had family friends over to visit and then we headed to the cinema and afterwards the amusements where we played ‘pool.’ He absolutely loved it. Being 5 was so cool as he got to play grown up games like pool with Daddy.

We then headed back home and the family came over with yet more presents and we had a birthday buffet and celebrated properly with his Lightning McQueen birthday cake, which he loved.  We had a fabulous day and I can’t believe my beautiful little boy is not so little anymore and he’s growing up into such a fun loving, caring little boy.

Today got me thinking about children’s birthdays and how they are so different to when I was younger. Children seem to get so much money spent on them and it had me wondering if it was all necessary? I tried to think back to when I was 5 and I can remember having a few friends over, a birthday buffet and some party games in the house, our parties were great in those days but somehow they’ve evolved and changed over time.

What are your thoughts on the birthday parties we have today? And, do you think that they’re better, worse or just different to the ones we had? Let me know what you think? I’d love to know your thoughts……!
