Richard and I don’t usually buy one another gifts for birthdays and/or Christmas as we prefer to buy one another experiences and plan weekend trips or day trips out to the places that we love .

This year I decided to take Richard to Harrogate for a little day trip and take him Christmas sale shopping for his birthday. It’s a belated gift as his birthday is the 18th of December but, we’ve always got so much on in the run up to Christmas that its easier to plan trips for in between Christmas and New year. I’d arranged for the boys to stay at my sister’s for the day and overnight too so Richard and I had an evening on our own. We did contemplate staying over but, one of our favourite things to do is to be in our own home with the fire lit, a drink in hand and a movie on the tv so we decided not to stay overnight and come home.

So we got up early and headed to Harrogate, it really is such a beautiful place and one of my favourite places to visit . I’ve been here so many times before with the girls, my parents and Richard and there is so many great places to eat, drink and shop . When we arrived we were feeling quite peckish so we headed to Banyan for a light lunch and a few drinks.

In between Christmas and New Year is one of my favourite time of the year as it’s a time when you can kick back , relax and spend some quality time together . As parents of two young boys, it’s not often we get to spend a day alone. I always miss the boys when we’re not with them but, it is so important as a couple to spend that time together. It’s only been the last year or so when we’ve realised how important it is spend some time together as a couple, whether it’s on days out, weekends away or date nights. Being a parent of young children can be exhausting and it’s always nice to have to some time away too.

Once we’d had something to eat we then headed to our favourite shops including Crew Clothing, Joules, The White Company, Cath Kidston, Laura Ashley and so many more! Harrogate is a really great place for shopping and when we go we’re always sure to visit these shops and we usually make a purchase or two as well!

This day trip was no different and we stocked up on stocking fillers for next year from Fat Face and White Stuff, and we both bought jumpers in the Fat Face sale. I also stopped off and bought some Lavender body lotion for the boys from LUSH, it’s their Sleepy range, the boys love it as I massage it into their feet at bedtimes. The consistency is so luxurious and it smells delicious. I’ve found it’s a great addition to the boys bedtime routine as it relaxes them before bed and they love the smell, lucky them getting their feet massaged I wish someone would do that for me. It’s a lovely way for us to spend the evening and we often chat about our days, it’s my favourite time of the day!

We then stopped off and had a cheeky cocktail in All Bar One before heading to the Turkish restaurant that we’d booked for the evening meal . Richard found the restaurant, Konak Meze using tripadvisor and we decided to go there as it was number 3 on the list for the top restaurants in Harrogate. Even though it’s a small restaurant on the corner of a very quiet residential street there were over 1000 reviews and all of them were raving about the food and the service . We both chose different dishes so that we could sample one anothers and I started with the salsa and the Turkish bread whilst Richard had chicken patties with Turkish salad and both were delicious.

For our main meals, Richard went for the Konak Mixed Grill and I opted for the Basa Gavuk which was salmon, cod and swordfish in a white wine sauce with grilled vegetables and rice. They were both delicious and we certainly passed on our compliments to the chef. My father is Arabic so we were brought up sampling the delights of middle eastern cuisine so it was nice to go somewhere traditional and sample their food. It brought back so many memories growing up with Dad and these things have become even more special since we lost Dad earlier this year. But, I’ve got memories galore of good times together so I’ve got plenty to choose from.

As it was Richard’s birthday we were too full to try anything from the dessert menu but, the restaurant kindly brought out some Turkish cookies for a treat for Richard. They were served with whipped cream and pistachio nuts and we shared it together {it’s the little things}.

We had such a lovely day at Harrogate and it was quite nice as we checked back in with each other as individuals and as a couple too as we reflected on our Christmas break so far and discussed our plans for 2019. We always seem to do this when we have date night or breaks away from the children as it allows us to collect our thoughts, discuss our plans for the coming few months and plan for next year’s hopes and dreams.

Harrogate is a great place to visit so if you haven’t already been then it’s a must!
